Problem:

Using Microsoft Data Protection my SQL backups started failing. The failed jon log said

The job has been cancelled because of the failure of another job on which it depended. (ID 912)

Cause:

The SQL VSS writer enters a bad state. To make sure this is your problem open an administrative command prompt and type the following:

If you SQL Writer is in a bad state it will not show up in the list of VSS writers.

: If you see this, your SQL Writer is stable. If not, you need to restart the SQL Writer.

Solution:

To restart the SQl Writer, type the follwoing two commands.

Once your the SQL Writer has been successfully restarted, check to see if the writer is now listed by typing:

vssadmin list writers

Once your SQL writer is listed as Stable you will be able to successfully protect your SQL DBs again

Can’t see SharePoint databases in DPM.

Problem: When I try to select my SharePoint database in DPM I get the follwoing error:

The SharePoint farm cannot be protected because DPM did not find any dependent databases to be protected ( ID:32008 )

Here is the error

DPM is able to enumerate all SharePoint Databases in the SQL instance, so we can back them up through SQL like any other SQL database, but that leaves us with a much less granular backup solution taking away the ability to restore changes/deletions using to Sites, and farms.

Solution:

1. Run the SQL 2005 Client Tools – the only part of this installation required was the Connectivity Tools. I also installed the Management Studio for viewing the SQL Server if needed. The connectivity tools are needed from the DPM 2007 SP1 in order to resolve SQL Client Aliases. We had the tools installed on SQL server but were not aware of the need to have them on SharePoint as well.

2. Change the DPM client for SharePoint to use the farm administrator account. It was previously configured using the same account as DPM, which is the Domain Admin account. You must use the farm admin account or the databases will not enumerate when creating your protection group.

DPM encountered a retryable VSS error

Problem: If you are trying to protect Hyper-V images using Data Protection Manager 2007 you may come accross the following error:

DPM encountered a retryable VSS error. (ID 30112 Details: Unknown error (0x800423f3) (0x800423F3))

Cause: The Hyper-V VSS Writer enters into a Failed State.

Verify the State by typing "vssadmin list writers" in an administrative command prompt

Solution: You need to upgrade the version on your Integration Services via the Hyper-V Management Console.

Login to the Hper-V server and open Hyper-V Manager
On the top menu, click Action – Insert Integration Services Setup Disk. on 2008 the autorun should start up, but if not just open up My computer and run the setup for the Integration Services disk.)

A restart of the VM is required.
Go back to the Hyper-V server in the administrative command prompt and restart the VMMS.

Type "net stop vmms" then "net start vmms"

Problem:

When trying to open Public Folders in Exchange Admin I get the error

“The token supplied to the function is invalid ID”

Cause:

The virtual direcotry Exadmin is set to require SSL

Solution:

1. In the properties of the virtual root Exadmin in IIS, go to the “Directory Security” tab.
2. In the “Secure Communications” section select “Edit”.
3. Make sure to deselect “Require secure channel (SSL)” and “Require 128-bit encryption.”
4. If the “Require 128-bit encryption.” is selected and greyed out, make sure to select “Require secure channel (SSL)” and deselect “Require 128-bit encryption.” then deselect “Require secure channel (SSL)” again.
5. Goto Windows 2000/2003 Support Tools and launch ADSI Edit.
6. In the left side pane expand the Configuration container.
7. Expand the following:
CN=Configuration
CN=Services
CN=Microsoft Exchange
CN=
CN=Administrative Groups
CN=First Administrative Group
CN=Servers
CN=Protocols
CN=HTTP
CN=1
CN=Exadmin
8. Right Click on CN=Exadmin and choose Properties.

Scroll down to “msExchSecureBindings” in the list of attributes.
10. Mark it and click “Edit”.
11. Mark the :443: entry, click “Remove” and then “Ok”.
12. Click “Apply” and then “Ok”.
13. Close out of ADSI Edit, close and reopen Exchange System Manager and test Public Folder access again.

Form Required to View This Message Cannot be Displayed

When I use my calendar to create a new appointment I get the following error:

The form required to view this message cannot be displayed.
Contact your administrator.

Cause:

The Frmcache.dat file has become corrupted.

Solution:

rename the Frmcache.dat file located in the \forms directory. Then perform one of the following two procedures (A or B) to recreate the file. Then perform C.

Outlook Web Access (OWA) Red X on new emails

Problem:

Outlook Web Access running on Windows Server 2003 SBS with all current patches

Incoming messages are displayed normally. If we try to create a new message, the message body is not shown, but a small red X is displayed in the top left of the area where the message body should be. This also happens if we try to forward or reply to a message. Everything else is working as it should.

Is something blocking the display of this section of the message body.

Cause:

This behavior occurs because Windows Vista no longer includes support for the ActiveX control that is used for HTML editing in Outlook Web Access.

Solution:

This Microsoft Exchange Server hotfix resolves this issue. This hotfix enables a new editor for Internet Explorer. The new editor uses an Internet Explorer “iframe” instead of an ActiveX control. After you apply hotfix 911829, you are not required to first click in the compose frame in Outlook Web Access before you edit text.
